GALLERY SEARCH FOR APHRODITE by Helen Golden. The artist created this work using xRes's tools to colorize and texturize an image, which was originally scanned in from a black and white photograph. Importing the 20MB file into xRes was fast. The artist enjoyed using xRes as it let her work intuitively with the combination of creative tools and speedy technology. Drawing on his knowledge of channel effects learned in traditional image editors, the artist explored combinations of effects filters and multiple channels to achieve the rounded, metallic effect on the text and background. Click the image to see it full size. CORAL by Bonny Lhotka. In this collage-like work, bits of paint and collage material were scanned in and imported into Macromedia xRes. Color adjustment tools, a variety of brushes and water tools, and object-layering functionality were all used. Objects were arranged, rearranged, distorted, and retouched, until the artist was satisfied with the composition. Click the image to see it full size. AMBIGUITY OF DESIRE by Helen Golden. In this work, the artist plays with negative spaces. Starting with two out-of-focus photographs, the artist used xRes to invert the images, and create their "echoes." Big files were used in creating this work and painlessly manipulated in xRes. Click the image to see it full size. EYE OF FAUVE by Ian Cumming. This abstract composition was created entirely in xRes with its native filter set. Starting with a composition of multi-hued objects, the swirl filter and xRes's compositing modes were utilized for blending and color effects. After flattening the composition, the ripple filter was applied to create a textured look. Click the image to see it full size. MAGICIANS by Todd Herman. This 92MB photo-illustration began as scanned images of hands, faces, and props. Once masks had been built for each object, the artist created his hi-res composition inside of xRes. Extensive cloning and airbrushing were used to make the composition seamless. Finally, color correction was applied to create a sepia tone. Click the image to see it full size. FOREST by Karin Schminke. Working with source material from her own photographs, the artist used Macromedia xRes to create this image. Copies of the painted image were made and layered, with various filters applied. The resulting image was composited with the original photograph. Click the image to see it full size. FRAME by Paul Lackner. Stock photography and scans were combined in xRes to make this multilayered photo-composition. After filtering the images, opacity control was used to control the blending of the images. A Glass lens filter was performed on the ampersand and the resulting object was composited. Click the image to see it full size. GARDEN OF XRES by Mark Landman. This mutli-object composition combines photographic elements with backgrounds and text objects generated using channel operations. Gaussian blurs and offset duplicated alpha channels created most of the hi-res effects. The artist enjoyed xRes's speed in create special effects at a printable size. Click the image to see it full size. GLASS MENAGERIE by Bonny Lhotka. Starting with a photograph of a mismatched collection of glassware, the artist made color adjustments, applied the Sharpen and Blur filters, opened a second copy and layered it onto the first, and repeated the whole process several times. She imported the image of the fish and then applied gradient folds and color sets. Click the image to see it full size. HELMET OF FLOWERS by Dorothy Simpson Krause. Macromedia xRes was used to merge a photo of an old Mexican woman carrying a basket of flowers with a Mayan statue, with the result that the woman's flowers and arms were integrated into the statue's face and body. The artist enjoyed using xRes to create gritty textures and add sharp primary colors. Click the image to see it full size. HERSTORY by Judi Moncrieff. The artist scanned her mother's charm bracelet and combined it with a photo of her great-grandmother. From those images as well as others, she used Macromedia xRes to create a multitude of objects, and to condense, flip, and merge them. The woman, for example, was created from five different objects. Click the image to see it full size. LILY by Karin Schminke. In creating this image, the artist built a composite with several copies of photographs, each of which had been manipulated in Macromedia xRes. The artist enjoyed using xRes's painting tools, in particular the water and chalk tools to create desired effects in this image. Click the image to see it full size. MADONNA by Dorothy Simpson Krause. This work involved importing 50-60 MB files, which the artist claims could have been done only with Macromedia xRes. The artist worked intuitively and quickly and lost herself in the creative options which xRes has to offer. She used the software to push her limits and help her grow as an artist. Click the image to see it full size. BIKARA by Joseph Kelter, Bad Cat Design. This multi-object composite was created from a multitude of sources. Bikara, an ox, is the god who represents the month of February. Pictorial and line art elements were combined with opacity and blend modes. The 52 MB CMYK TIFF image was one of twelve printed in a calendar for a Japanese firm. Click the image to see it full size. STAINED GLASS by Judi Moncrieff. The artist used color options available in Macromedia xRes as a basis for this work and created entirely new objects from scanned images. For example, the background, which is layered, fuzzy, soft, and dream-like, began as a photograph of a firepipe. The artist was impressed with xRes's ability to produce intense color. Click the image to see it full size. SWIRL by Ian Cumming. Created entirely within xRes, this piece utilized the swirl filter, gradients, objects and the blend modes to create a wave of color. The hard outlines of the objects set off the smooth color blends and the curve of the vortex to give a sense of heightened tension. Click the image to see it full size. ULTRAXRESVILLE by Mark Landman. The third in a series of resolution channel operation objects, this 25MB file makes use of the satin setting inside of xRes's gradient designer to create a background, as well as channel operations on the floating text object. Click the image to see it full size. Most of these images were designed for 24 bit hi-resolution printed output. The files displayed in the Macromedia xRes Gallery are 8-bit low-res versions of the original hi-res files Macromedia would like to thank the artists listed for contributing.
